Interesting cable colors

Author: Hengli Motor Update Time:2025-01-21 Hit:

Do you know what different colored cables mean? Today, Hengli Motor will give you a brief introduction

In industrial and civilian electricity, transmission cables are always marked with various colors. Are there any special regulations for the colors of these colorful cables? Is it a mandatory requirement or a convention?

1、 Cable color definition

According to GB/T6995.2-2008 Methods for Identification of Wires and Cables, the standard colors used for identification of wires and cables are: white, red, black, yellow, blue, green, orange, gray, brown, blue-green, purple, and pink. GB 2681-81 "Colors of Wires in Electrical Equipment" specifies the calibration meanings of various colors.

Black: Internal wiring of devices and equipment.

Brown: The positive pole of a DC circuit.

Red: C phase of three-phase circuit; The collector of a semiconductor transistor; The cathode of a semiconductor diode, rectifier diode, or thyristor.

Yellow: Phase A of a three-phase circuit; The base of a semiconductor transistor; The control poles of thyristors and bidirectional thyristors.

Green: Phase B of a three-phase circuit.

Blue: Negative pole of DC circuit; The emitter of a semiconductor transistor; The anode of a semiconductor diode, rectifier diode, or thyristor.

Light blue: neutral or neutral wire of a three-phase circuit; The grounding neutral line of a DC circuit.

White: Main electrode of bidirectional thyristor; Semiconductor circuits without specified colors.

Yellow and green dual color: grounding wire for safety purposes.

Parallel red and black: an AC circuit connected by dual core wires or twisted pair wires.

All cable colors have national standards and must be enforced.

2、 Application of Cable Colors

Application of Cable Colors

In household electricity, single-phase 220V AC power is generally used, which is a live wire marked in red; A neutral wire, marked in blue; A safe grounding wire, marked in yellow and green.

In power transmission lines, a three-phase five wire system is generally used, with yellow, green, and red representing phases A, B, and C respectively. The other two are the blue working neutral line N and the yellow green dual color protective neutral line PE.

Industrial power supply generally adopts a three-phase four wire system, where yellow, green, and red represent A, B, and C phases respectively, and the yellow green dual color line is the protective neutral line PE.

3、 The role of cable color

The national standard specifies mandatory requirements for cable color. On the one hand, standardized wiring makes the overall project more beautiful and improves the image of the overall wiring. More importantly, standardized wiring is used to prevent the occurrence of erroneous operations. In power construction, construction personnel can easily and correctly distinguish various types of wires in the conductor based on the color of the cable, preventing wiring errors and major accidents.

In many industrial applications, many high current and high voltage cables themselves are only black, and the cables must be labeled with various colored heat shrink tubing when in use.
