hello everyone! Year after year, the seasons flow like water. "2019 is coming soon, and I extend my New Year's greetings to everyone in Beijing!
In 2018, we lived a fulfilling and determined life. This year, we have overcome various risks and challenges, promoted high-quality economic development, accelerated the transformation of old and new driving forces, and maintained economic operation within a reasonable range. The battle to defend the blue sky, clear water, and pure land is progressing smoothly, and various livelihood undertakings are accelerating, resulting in continuous improvement of people's lives. The national strategies of coordinated development of Beijing Tianjin Hebei, development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt, and construction of the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area are steadily being implemented. I was delighted to see the lush greenery on both sides of the Yangtze River, the rolling waves of rice on the ten thousand acre land of the Three Rivers, the vibrant Qianhai in Shenzhen, the vibrant Zhangjiang in Shanghai, and the soaring Hong Kong Zhuhai Macao Bridge... These achievements are the result of the rolling up of sleeves by people of all ethnic groups in the country and the sweat of the new era's fighters.
This year, Made in China, Created in China, and Built in China worked together to continue changing the face of China. The Chang'e-4 probe has been successfully launched, the second aircraft carrier has set sail for sea trials, a domestically produced large amphibious aircraft has made its first underwater flight, and the Beidou Navigation Satellite System has taken a solid step towards global networking. Here, I would like to pay tribute to every scientist, every engineer, every 'great country craftsman', every builder and participant!
This year, there has been a lot of good news about poverty alleviation. 125 poverty-stricken counties across the country have passed the poverty alleviation inspection, and 10 million rural poor people have been lifted out of poverty. 17 anti-cancer drugs have been reduced in price and included in the medical insurance catalog, further addressing the issue of poverty caused by illness. I often care about the comrades who are fighting in the front line of poverty alleviation, more than 2.8 million village cadres and the first secretary. They are very dedicated and awesome, and must take care of their health.
I always think of the disadvantaged masses. In Sanhe Village, Liangshan, Sichuan, I visited two Yi ethnic villagers, Ji Haoyeqiu and Jie Lie'e Amu. In Sanjianxi Village, Jinan, Shandong, Zhao Shunli and my family sat together and chatted about daily life. In Donghuayuan Community, Fushun, Liaoning, I went to Chen Yufang's house to learn about the situation of safe haven relocation and resettlement. In Lianzhang Village, Qingyuan, Guangdong, I talked to impoverished household Lu Yihe about poverty alleviation plans. Their sincere and simple faces still come to my mind. On the occasion of the New Year, I wish the villagers a prosperous and thriving life.
This year, we solemnly celebrated the 40th anniversary of reform and opening up, carried out systematic, comprehensive, and restructuring reforms of the Party and state institutions, launched more than 100 important reform measures, held the first China International Import Expo, and launched the construction of the Hainan Pilot Free Trade Zone. The world has seen the acceleration of China's reform and opening up, and the determination of China to carry out the reform and opening up to the end. Our pace of reform will not stagnate, and the door to openness will only open wider and wider.
I noticed that this year, most of the first batch of college students after the resumption of the college entrance examination have already retired, and a large number of "post-2000s" have entered university campuses. More than 100 million people without registered residence are continuing to settle down in cities, 13 million people have found jobs in cities and towns, 5.8 million houses have been built to solve the problem of shantytowns, and new citizens have warm homes. Many residents of Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan have obtained residence permits, and Hong Kong has entered the national high-speed rail network. A mobile China is full of vitality for prosperous development. We are all striving to run, we are all dream chasers.
At this moment, I particularly want to mention some shining names. This year, there is an additional "Nanren East Star" in the sky, and comrades Lin Junde and Zhang Chao have been added to the hanging statues of the military models. We must remember Comrade Wang Jicai, who defended the island and the country for 32 years, Comrade Huang Qun, Comrade Song Yuecai, Comrade Jiang Kaibin, who bravely sacrificed themselves to protect the experimental platform, and other heroes who sacrificed their lives for the country and the people. They are the cutest people of the new era, always worth remembering and learning from.
This year, many new and old friends came to China again. We held the annual meeting of the Boao Forum for Asia, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Qingdao Summit, the Beijing summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation and other home diplomatic activities, put forward China's propositions and made China's voice. My colleagues and I visited five continents, participated in many important diplomatic activities, had extensive exchanges with leaders of various countries, consolidated friendship, enhanced trust, and expanded our circle of friends.
In 2019, we will solemnly celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. 70 years of overcoming obstacles, 70 years of trials and tribulations. The people are the solid foundation of the republic, and they are the greatest confidence in our governance. Along the way, the Chinese people have worked hard and independently, creating a remarkable Chinese miracle. On the new journey, no matter how chaotic the clouds and winds may be, we must firmly rely on the people, adhere to self-reliance and hard work, and push forward the unprecedented great cause step by step with rock solid confidence, the determination to seize the day, and the unyielding perseverance.
In 2019, there are both opportunities and challenges, and we still need to work hard and strive together. The policy measures of tax reduction and fee reduction should take root and enable enterprises to go into battle with light equipment. Sincerely respect all kinds of talents and fully stimulate their innovative and creative vitality. We should listen to the voices of grassroots cadres, so that those who dare to take on responsibilities and make achievements have motivation and direction. To complete the poverty alleviation task for over 10 million impoverished people in rural areas as scheduled, we still need to stick to the goal and work hard. We should care for retired soldiers who have made contributions to defending their country. At this time, delivery workers, sanitation workers, taxi drivers, and millions of laborers are still working hard. We want to thank these creators and guardians of a better life. Everyone has worked hard.
Looking at the world, we are facing a great change not seen in a century. No matter how the international situation changes, China's confidence and determination to safeguard national sovereignty and security will not change, and China's sincerity and goodwill in maintaining world peace and promoting common development will not change. We will actively promote the joint construction of the "the Belt and Road", continue to promote the construction of a community with a shared future for mankind, and make unremitting efforts to build a more prosperous and beautiful world.
